Commercial motion design is big business. Here are some of our favorite marketing and entertainment pieces that will cause both inspiration and procrastination.
Since the late 1800s (and possibly before that) we’ve wanted to add motion to our static images. The introduction of the film camera aided this desire and led to traditional 2D animation. Once that was perfected, sights were set even higher with the 3D animation of the 80s and 90s.
Whether its 2D or 3D, motion graphics have been a part of marketing and advertising strategies almost since their inception. There have been a lot of amazing pieces of art in the world of commercial motion design. So let’s get inspired (and procrastinate just a bit) and check out some of the best commercial motion design from over the years.
Harmonix: Beatles Rock Band — Commercial Spot
Musical video games were big business back in 2009, and they got even bigger when The Beatles came to Rock Band. Here is a great piece of motion design by Passion Pictures that utilizes both 2D and 3D animation alongside a Beatles soundtrack.
Clover: Way Better — Commercial Spot
Created by Shy the Sun for the Clover milk brand company, this commercial shows off an incredible 3D world with smooth animations and great camera movement. With the kind of execution usually reserved for Pixar features, this commercial is both imaginative and well crafted.
Cartoon Network: Madventure — Promotional Spot
Cartoon Network has always been known to create solid ads and promotional spots. The Madventure spot is no different. Created by Adam Dedman for the 2010 YCN Cartoon Network brief, we see a great use of 2D style art within a 3D environment.
Nat Geo: Ancient Secrets — Opening
Created by Lumbre for the National Geographic series Ancient Secrets, we once again see 2D imagery within a 3D space used to create solid and fluid animation. The assets in this spot directly relate to the programming and they take the viewer through a journey, much like the show.
Vandroid: Graphic Novel — Trailer
This short trailer for the Dark Horse graphic novel Vandroid was created by Golden Wolf, who took the pages of the comic and brought them to life in a very 80s-inspired animation. Also, if you like the soundtrack for this one, you can find it here.
Sapporo: Legendary Biru — Commercial Spot
Sapporo Brewery hired Crush and Sons and Daughters to craft a commercial highlighting the long-standing history behind their beer. The collaborators came back with a pretty amazing spot that uses live action, 2D animation, and 3D animation.
Pause Fest: Melbourne 2014 — ID Spot
Pause Fest always has some sort of great animation showcase within their program. 2014 was not different, when Váscolo and other design firms came together to develop and create this solid and amazingly colorful animated identity spot for the fest.
Guardians of the Galaxy — User Interface Animation
Territory Studios has been behind some of the very best user interfaces in Hollywood. Here’s the showreel for the UI used in Guardians of the Galaxy, which was seen in the trailer and the film itself.
